Our Training Programme

The basis of our programme is Goju Ryu Karate. Our style follows the Karate taught by Hanshi (Master) Tadahiko Ohtsuka of Japan, the head of the Goju Kensha organisation. A little different than most Japanese or Okinawan Goju Ryu, the Goju Kensha style incorporates ideas from Tai chi and other “soft” Chinese arts, as well as takedowns and breakfalls.

Most classes begin with a 15 minute warm up, followed by basics and then a particular topic for the night.  Our training programme includes kihon (basic techniques), Kata (forms) and kata bunkai (self-defense applications), striking work (pads and bags) self-defense and kumite (sparring). We also have an advanced training night for brown and black belt students only.

Instructors

The chief instructor of Kiyo do kai is Sensei Tim Baxter. Having trained in Karate for 22 years, Sensei Tim has trained in Shotokan, Budokan (in which he holds a 1st Dan black belt) and Goju Ryu (in which he holds a 3rd Dan black belt). Sensei Tim has also trained with overseas masters of Karate.

Currently, one of Sensei Tim’s goals is learning Chinese internal arts. To that end he has been studying the Cheng Ming system : a world-wide organisation that teaches Chinese arts such as Hsing-I, Tai chi and Ba Gua) in Australia, Europe, Israel, USA and Taiwan.

Once a year Sensei Tim travels to Melbourne once a year to train with his teachers David Zarb and Master Wang Fu Lai –the head of the Cheng Ming system). Sensei Tim teaches a class in Tai chi for arthritis sufferers at the ASB stadium on Friday mornings.

Through Sensei Tim, Kiyo do Kai is affiliated with Shihan David Zarb (5th Dan) of Australia. Shihan Zarb runs a large karate organisation in Melbourne, as well as teaching Chinese Arts David is the personal representative of Master Wang Fu Lai.
